Meet our new GP, Dr Ebony Dunne

At Bluff Road Medical Centre, we’re proud to offer a GP Registrar Program. Through this program, qualified medical doctors undertaking advanced training to specialise in General Practice consult at the clinic. The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners requires aspiring General Practitioners to attend placements at up to four different medical practices. We offer placements for 6 or 12 months. Without further ado, let’s meet Ebony Dunne. Ebony will be a fully-fledged GP next month and returns to the practice after completing her GP training. Ebony was a GP registrar at Bluff Road Medical Centre 18 months ago.

1) Where did you study and train?

I grew up on a farm in country Victoria and went to school in Warragul. I studied my Bachelor of Medicine/Surgery at Monash University and was part of a rural pathway. I did two years at Melbourne and then two years in Bendigo and Mildura, before returning to Melbourne. When I finished university, I worked at Monash Health for three years, then worked at the Cairns Base Hospital. I then moved to WA where I worked at the women’s hospital in Perth for 18 months before I started GP training. In my first GP registrar term I spent six months at Bluff Road Medical and I returned in February.

2) What are your special interests?

Women’s health (I have a Diploma of Obstetrics and Gynaecology) and preventative health. I also enjoy working with children and in palliative care. In addition, I’m really interested in Buruli Ulcers (a bacterial infection of the skin). They were quite rare, but their numbers have been increasing in recent years down on the Mornington Peninsula and they’re often not detected or misdiagnosed. They usually respond well to treatment once they’re diagnosed.

3) What do you love about your work?

I love being able to deal with people and helping them in their lives, whether it be with a simple problem or to get them through different stages of their life. It’s a pretty unique job in that you do get to support people through lots of different things. I like variety as well.

4) Is there a difference between seeing a GP and a GP Registrar?

Not particularly, it just means that the GP registrar may need some extra guidance or support as they are still learning. Also, as a registrar you are required to rotate through clinics. Since finishing my training I am very much looking forward to being at Bluff Road as a permanent doctor which will allow better continuity/ongoing care of the patients that see me.

5) What are your hobbies?

I do triathlons and I enjoy running and hiking. I love travelling as well, baking and spending time with family and friends. I also love the beach. Ebony consults at Bluff Road Medical on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. To make an appointment, click here or phone 9598 6244.
